Linking Genre theories to our Thriller

Myself and Ben both worked together while filming the Thriller of our AS coursework.

Chandler - The setting to our thriller has similar themes to it as actual thrillers on the market as we've filmed it in a town, the men are dressed in business wear. The prop we used was also were shuttle.

Neale - Our Thriller genre is dynamic and develops over time, this is done through the use of dark lighting and a tense sound track.

mittel - we used male and female characters to open our audience wider. Allowing it to sell and be more appropriate to multiple audiences.

Altman - Emotional - gets the audience hooked as woman is kidnapped, giving an intellectual pleasure of asking "Who done it".

Buckingham - we was not just given the genre of thriller, we had to work to make our film look like a thriller a to make it clear to the audience that this is a thriller.

Genre Notes

Genre origimally comes from Latin but if from France.  The word genre means type.

All genres have subgenres - These mean they are divided up into more specific categories that allow audiences to identify them specifically their familiar and what become recognisable characteristics.

Steve Neal - stresses that genres are not systems that are processes -they are dynamic and evolve over time.

Generic Characteristics
1.  Typical Mise-En-Scene/Visual Style - lighting, props, setting, location and costume
2   Typical Types of Narrative - Plots, Historical, setting and Set pieces.
3   Generic Types I.E typical characters (do typical male/female roles exist, archetypes)
4   Typical Personnel (directors, producers, actors, stars and auteurs)
5   Typical sound designing (sound design, dialogue, music and sound effect)
6   Typical Editing style

Rick Altman argues that genre offers audiences 'a set of pleasures' - Emotional Pleasures, visceral Pleasures and Intellectual Puzzles.

Emotional Pleasures - offered to the audience of genre films and particularly significant when they generate a strong audience response.

Visceral Pleasures - Elicits a physical effect upon its audience. This can be a feeling of revulsion, kinetic speed or a 'roller coaster road'.

Intellectual Puzzles -film genres such as a thriller or whodunit offer the pleasure in trying to unravel a mystery or puzzle. Pleasure is derived from deciphering the plot and forecasting the end or the being surprised by the unexpected.

Visual styles for our music video

We can do a spinning shot of our character sitting down looking sad; where she is staying still the world around her is not moving. This represents her depression and how far apart she is from the rest of the world - this is a good camera and editing technique which we could use.

This video gives us an idea of what type of lighting we can use in our music video. It is dark and gloomy, making the character appear isolated and alone. The vignette around the edge of the shot also makes the character look claustrophobic and surrounded by nothingness. This is a good idea for our video because the people in our video feel alone.

At the end of our video it will change to a more happy, vibrant video. The slow motion and bright lighting seen in this advert is an example of a happy atmosphere which we could use for our video.

Camera angles from different videos for inspiration

This is the kind of camera angle we want to include to show the girl at her weakest part of her journey, this is to show her weak and being on edge.
We want to create a close up to their eye to show that it's all in her head and that she has some huge body image issues.

This is the other type of angle were wanting to include in the music video.

This is another camera technique were wanting to use while she's applying make up.

Using Photoshop, After Effects & Final Cut Pro To Edit and change an image

For our music video it will feature a picture of a woman looking at herself in the mirror and various other pictures of herself that have been photoshopped. This video below shows how to enhance and change the body image to suit our needs.

Below these two videos show how to manipulate and edit a persons body and face.

This video shows how to remove skin imperfections of a persons face.

This video shows how to use Photoshop to create lens flare

This video shows how we will show the effects of photoshop, it uses a cross dissolve effect between the video and the image of her completely photoshopped. This is at 0.50 Seconds.

We could also use After effects to show a woman looking at her imaginary self in her house or outside. This will be created by doing up the woman with hair, clothes and makeup and filming this shot. Then using after effects to show her natural self looking at her "perfect self". This video shows how we will create this cloning effect.

References & Inspiration: Analysis of Our Influences On Our Image

As part of our coursework we need to find artists images that we can relate to as we're want to be able to inherence it in to ours. Our artists image is very different to the artists in the chart as our artists audience is much smaller then the artists in the charts.

This is Ellie Gouldings website which has the option for her fans to be able to follow her on Twitter, join her Facebook page, see videos of her producing her music and her live to get a taste of what it will be like to see her live. This also gives access to her YouTube channel where her fans can be updated about new realises her audience can also access this through subscribing to email updates about her new realises and tour dates.

This is Ellie Gouldings Digi-pack, it shows photos of her in her music videos and creating the music. On the back of the divi-pack it shows the other singles she's included into the album.

Ellie Gouldings image in the song You Song is showing that not following being "normal" doesn't make you different to any other person. She also have a shaven part of her hair which visually makes her different to artists such as Beyonce who is image driven, this shows Ellie Goulding's audience that image isn't everything. Ellie also uses her guitar.

This is Emile Sande's website, like Ellie Goulding, Emile Sande has linked her social networking sites up to her website so her fans and audience has access to follow and access updates. You can access when tours are on, photo galley and her proforming live in previous tours.

This is the back, front and disc of a digi-pack by Emile Sande, this shows an image of her on the front, she's displayed this with a black and white colouring, bring a very professional finish, having the black and white colouring shows that there's two types of music included in this album, emotional and uplifting, the emoshionals ones are shown through the dark colours in the album cover, where as the up lifting ones are shown through the lighter shades of colours.

Emile Sande is also very different to the common, popular female artist as she doesn't have the "normal" female long hair. The song Beneath Your Beautiful, she's using a paino and a stage which is a different way to what many other artists do as she's not dancing around the stage.
This is the fount of Ed Sheeran's digi-pack  main colour of this is orange, which is displaying his ginger hair, this shows that he's displaying himself as being creative and using something that he's known visually for which shows that he's enhancing his natural image, leading on to him caring more about the music he creates rather then the image he's creating.

This is the back of his digi-pack as he's gotten a orange background with white writing. The music he creates is romantic, this shows that the majority of his audience are romantic. The white font colour shows pure as white is communally known as a very pure colour.

This is the famous giutar which is just as know as him. This has an orange paw print. The orange colour is a theme with his on his digi pack and which enhances the known colour of him which is orange.

This is Ed Sheeran's website, from this you can follow him on Twitter, join his Facebook page and get emails relating to his new realises and tours so you can have the chance to see him live. You can also access his albums through iTunes. The way he's displayed his website is in an artists way, this shows that he's more focused on the music rather then the image he's creating.

Ed Sheeran's image is very different from the other males visual image as he's not portraying men as always being in a club, doing drugs and drinking. In his some Give Me Love he's sending out a different image then to artists such as, Drake. He also uses his guitar which adds to the image of being different as he's part of the sound to the image.

This is Bruno Mar's website which like Ellie Goulding and Emile Sande he has links to his Twitter so his fans can follow him with his updates of tours and what he's doing, theres also links to his Facebook page where his fans can like and keep up to date with him. There's links to his YouTube channel so his fans can see when he's produced a new single and music video.

This is the fount of Bruno Mar's album cover he's using subtle colours yet bright which draws attention to his album. It shows a man dressed in black which is meant to be Bruno Mars as he's commonly dressed in black in his music videos. He's displayed his digi - pack in a creative way showing that he cares more about the music he creates rather then the image. Most of the song he creates are typically romantic songs, he shows he romantic through his digi - pack because he's following a path which is leading to a rocket taking off almost sending out the message of 'I'll love you to the moon and back'.

This is the back of Bruno Mar's album cover which has a deep yellow colour and then more of a lighter yellow circle in the middle which consists of the singles which are included in the album.
Bruno Mar is another artists we've gathered influence from as he's very different visual image in his music video in If I Was Your Man, he's gone for a different way as he's not making talking about having sex with girls as may artists do. He also uses a piano in the video.

After looking at these different Digi packs and websites we've been able to get an in depth idea on what kind of things were going to be needing to include in our website and digi pack when we come to do it.

Inspiration For Our Music Video

The Never Ending Pursuit of perfection

This is one of the first videos we watched about body image, this showed use the full effect and huge impact on the world the media has on young people. This shows various different statistics which emphasize the drastic n the world. Body image is entirely based on aspiring to be like someone else, the idea of the perfect body is artificial, This is created using computer software to touch up images and reduce and increase different body part sizes to create this aspirational "perfect figure".

Dove Real Beauty Sketches

This advert is about peoples perception of themselves, it shows and provides an understanding of peoples pessimistic opinion of themselves and shows how other people see them. This video shows a positive outlook on how other people would describe someone else in comparison to how people criticize themselves.

Positive Body Image

This video shows a girl looking at herself in the mirror seeing something that isn't actually real. She sees herself as larger in the mirror when she is the complete opposite, this inspired us to use this technique to portray the image of low self esteem. It also shows photoshopped images which we will also be doing to enhance the image itself.

Beyoncé - Pretty Hurts

This music video shows the struggle of the artist Beyoncé throughout the video. We have taken inspiration of idea of eating cotton wool, this fills up the stomach making you feel hungry so you don't eat, this would be a intertextual reference. Also we could use the idea of someone weighing themselves and not being the "perfect weight". We will also be using the idea of having the perfect sized face shape as shown in the screenshot from the music video below:

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass

This song is a catchy doo-wop song, which is about self-acceptance (and unapologetic bum shaking). As our music video will be a narrative our song is about the struggle being over so we will be using different aspects and ideas form this video to show the struggle is over. This music video is different in comparison to the other videos and music videos I have looked at as this is a positive view on body image. This video shows women embracing their body.

Other songs that show body image include:
Beautiful Christina Aguilera
Piece of me Britney Spears
Girl next door and Imperfection Saving Jane
Just a little bit Maria Mena

Lily Allen - Hard Out Here

This music video is also targeting body image, is shows the struggle of being a woman and trying to be the perfect size and shape. The actors in this video are also not supermodels and have imperfections showing that it is okay to not have the "perfect figure". This video also shows surgery to change and alter herself like the beyoncé music video.

Elle Fanning Film About Body Image

This short video shows the 15-year-old actress walking through a dimly-lit subterranean party filled with emaciated models in various states of undress and gyration. She goes in a bright bathroom and starts to apply mascara, as her hand goes up to her face, her skin becomes a grotesque, broken mask. She looks horrified and starts picking at her face. After it goes back to normal, she is so overcome with upset she makes herself vomit in a toilet. We could also use an intertexual reference of the bathroom scene of her looking in the mirror and becoming a broken mask.
We will use the same style in the way that this video was filmed, this is in the perspective of a narrative of her going through a struggle. Also it used point of view which we will be using as well.

Marylin Monroe
Marylin Monroe was a major sex symbol who embraced her curvaceous body. This still to this day help inspire young women to love their body no matter what size.

Target Audience Analysis - Updated

Mood Board

Here is a mood board showing the basic idea of what our music video will entail. As you can see it is focussing on teenager girls or young woman and their insecurities. In our video we will include girls feeling isecure about their size and also their face, making them put on a lot of make up. We will show girls crying, putting on make-up and looking in their reflection or at photos of themselves.
In the end of the video we will show the girls overcoming their insecurities.

Breaking down music videos - Noel Gallagher

Oasis - Dont look back in anger:

 - Strange & unordinary
- Old fashioned
- Relaxed
- Based around love
- Informal
- Artist is main focus - authenticity
- Carefree - doesn't care about anything else
- Manor House - got money
- Desirable
- Popular
- Heterosexual audience
- Vintage taxi cab - implies he comes from a common, working class background, British example
- Notion of looking - Voyeurism
- sunglasses - John Lennon (The Beatles) - John Lennon's protest (mentions in lyrics 1960's) intertextual reference

How do we re-brand a shy guitarist as a solo-artist?

What character roles 'star in text'?
What is significant?
Is there any voyeurism?
Intertextual references?
Relationship to sound (sound and visuals)?

Death of you and me - Noel Gallagher:

- Set in Wild West - Western diner - Compares to when he was in Oasis and was based around British theme
- Girl in the blue dress is the main character and main focus
- She wants to escape (standing at the window) - connection with something?
- Her uniform is brighter than anything else - she shouldn't be in the run down building or with the other people
- Camera takes us to the man - link between him and girl - goes past the sign saying 'last chance'
- Man is writing lyrics - star in text
- He is wearing a white shirt (purity, cleanliness) - father figure?, Ring - , Sunglasses - old video, hiding himself
- Horse and trap - not very friendly, dark, gothic people, looks funeral like, villainous
- Man in diner - creepy, ugly - link between him and gothic/evil horses
- Themes of suicide (drowning) or idea of water being purified (baptism)
- Can see the visuals of instruments being played
- Girl is sad so when she falls in the water it is as though she is killing herself but when the band arrive she is then happy and disappears into the cart
- Her dress is short, also wet therefore clinging to her - voyeurism
- Community of band
- "I can feel the storm cloud sucking up my soul" - she needs a freedom, get away, - Storm cloud - horse and cart
- Christ like pose - not just British
- Hand on heart - the ring (), he is pushing her - she is falling away from him, rebirth? death? -  baptism (he is the priest, religious figure)
- red door frame - hell? rebirth?
- happy outside the diner - escaped, free - then enters the 'evil' cart (opens by itself), 'flirting' with the dark side
- "to be continued" - makes the audience want to watch the next video
- Made a short film to the soundtrack

How have these themes/ this concept been developed?

What is life - Noel Gallagher:

- Black and white
- Darker colours - colours have been faded - evil, dark side, devilish
- Showing flash backs of the other video - added more quick and trippy shots
- Red and black room - no surroundings
- Fire lights the room - hell, olden times
- Spinning - not real life, a dream
- Man dressed in black, black top hat - childcatcher (chitty chitty bang bang)
- One on One conversation - she is not talking, he is scaring her, "fear" - he is controlling her, he is trying to corrupt her soul - Noel gallagher is repelling him (he is God)
- Women just appear - demons? Ghosts? - make her drink something - makes it out as though she is dreaming/dying, 'life flashes before her eyes'?
- The other two women are wearing revealing outfits, jumping in the car and standing at the side of the road, staring at the man in a provocative way and invite him into the car, focusses on their legs a lot and their facial expressions, they are being filmed - voyeurism
- They steal his car, stronger than him, clever
- He has a photo of the main girl
- She is alone, but being watched by the man from previous video and also this new character which is presented as evil
- She is in the boot of a car crying, when she is released she is then smiling - same man that released her as the other video
- More modernised
- Alice in Wonderland - top hat, red, blue dress and blonde hair (same outfit), goes into an unrealistic world, weird etc.  - intertextual reference
- Owl - foreshadowing she still has putriy in her, also relates to wizards and witches, occult (dark side, black side)
- Anti-christ - upside cross position at start of the video
 - Russel Brand - evil, devil (horny devil)

If I had a gun - Noel Gallagher:

- Older characters
- Reference to an owl again
- Love (wedding)
- Groom goes to kiss her but her attention is draw to a cowboy that appears - she leaves her husband to go see the cowboy - old companion?
- Cowboy stands out
- She is centre screen - main focus of her staring at him
- Cowboy jumps into pool, bride follows - similar to 1st video - freedom? she has been released from her husband and set free to the one she really loves
- Shows the diner again -
- The start of the video is explained
- Start of the video shows clips from rest of the video (swimming)
- Everyone is shocked she is with him - unrealistic, confusing, shocking?
- It then cuts to her looking sad in a house surrounded by wedding things
- Her dad understands why she is sad and hugs her
- Another girl is flirting with the groom - is he having an affair? is that why she is sad?
- Standing opposite sides of the pool - they have been separated for a long time - jumping in the water lets them be together
- The other girls and dad tells her to go after him - the father figure is similar to the one in the 1st video - he is sending her into the water to be free and to be happy
- Noel is the priest - looks sad at wedding but when cowboy shows up he is not at all disappointed - had he set it up as he returns to the diner at the end of the video?

David Guetta ft. Sia - Titanium

This song titanium closely relates to ideas we have for our music video. It features a young boy dealing with some kind of stuggle and stress. This is shown through  a narrative video of the boy messing up a classroom, riding his bike home in distress, leaving his home and running away. It also shows his mum shutting him out showing that she doesn't have any involvement or doesn't care about him.

We have looked at this video and it has given an idea to base our video around some kind of a personal stuggle like being bullied, abused or overcoming and dealing with an illness.

Borrowing Ideas From Other Artists

This is track from Ed Sheeran done, this is about seeing the struggles seen from an out siders point of view. This shows the struggle of a you woman who's trapped in a world she's never wanted to be involved in, I think our video could relate to this as we hope to create things a message about struggles and feeling like theres not way out of the way things are or whats happening to them through the tough times their going through. This video shows that there's no way out other then death either caused by others of themselves. This video has lyrics.

This is the official music video this shows the poisonous world the young lady is stuck in.

Borrowing ideas from other artists

Pink - Perfect
This is a good example of a similar idea to our video. This music video is showing the struggles of a girl from a very young age until she is a young adult. At the end of the video we can see that she has overcome her struggles and is now living a happy life with a husband and child. This has a similar theme to our video. This is because in our video we will be showing various struggles people go through, just as this video has. We will also be showing how that in the end there is a positive outcome and that the people have 'carried on' and have overcome their struggle. Pink's video is a good video to get ideas from as we can build of the idea of struggles which have been included in this video, e.g. bullying, anorexia etc.

Relationship between music & visuals

Relationships between music & visuals
Gorillas - Clint Eastwood
The sound is linked to the action in the video, for example the cracking floor cracks which has foley added over the top to enhance the scene.

Relative movement links to the soundtrack repeating lyrics.

Lip syncing of cartoon character in video.

This is a good representation of the link between audio and visuals as it's animated and has had sond effects and singing added after.

Use of Close ups

This is the same close up as all through the video, there is no editing through this video either.
This also only uses one shot, with no text. Their is reflection of the foreground on the glass.

This is the same action through out the video has no editing through out it. This shows no close ups and is a poor example of close up shots.

Emailing Our Artist With Our Idea

These are screenshots of emailing out artist about our possible ideas and also using her track as our song to make audio along to. The track were be using of hers is called Carry On.
