Location Reeces

Location 1:
As most of our music video will be set in a bedroom, we have found 2 options of which room to use. We could use this room as it is small and full of clutter. This gives off the image of claustrophobia and being trapped. The slanting ceilings also give this effect and make it look as though the room is almost closing in on our character. However, if we were to use this room we would have to remove any child like posters or toys.

Location 2:
This is the second room which we could use. This room is bigger than the other one, however looks more run down, old and dull. This could be a better room to use because of the dull colours setting the mood of depression and loneliness. There is also clutter in this room which could be useful as it gives the idea that the character does not care about mess and the mess almost represents her as a person and her emotion inside.

Location 3:
We could also use a bathroom in our music video. We can use this location for where she is picking herself back up and is getting through her struggle. We can use the mirror to show her putting on make-up, smiling and being happy. The brightness of the room will represent the joy which is coming back into her life and the fact she is escaping from the darkness.

Shot list for our music video

We are going to use a various amount of shots for our music video. The most prominent shot type which we will use is a close up. This is so that we can capture different feelings, such as emotion, claustrophobia and intensity. The close ups which we use will also be on different things:

The main characters face, showing her current mood:

Also a brief shot of our characters eye:

Objects around the room:

Another shot we will use is a high angle shot. This is to show her surrounds and also show her isolation:

Another shot which we are also going to use is a medium/long shot. We will use this when capturing the characters body, her reflection and also her surroundings:

When our character is on her laptop we will also have an over the shoulder shot of her:

Goodwin Analysis - Chav - Head Shoulder Knees and Toes

This is a performance music video.  The costume of the cast is very chavy with the tracky bottoms and snapbacks.

As the artist sings "head, shoulders, knees and toes" the actors move to the music and lyrics.
Notion of looking is used when the males are looking at the girls preform their dance moves.

Goodwin Analysis - HipHop - 187 - M.O.P

This has a liner structure to it as it tells a story during the making of it.
Notion of looking is created by the showing of an ambulance because it shows that someone in need or something has happened that need more assistance.
Second notion of looking is when black cars appear with blacked out windows, this shows that someone is there isn't wanting to show their face as they could be a key part as to what is happening with the appearance of the ambulance.

Goodwin Analysis - Hipster

The image of this is at the begining it has a 'traditional' structure to it. By changing colour to black and white create a notion of looking as it draws the audience attention.
This draws attention to the image of the costumes which shows that the image their creating is more important then the music as they want their listeners or watchers to enhance a similar image to be able to fit in to the stereotype of a hipster.
There is males gaze portraded in this as the men are trying to belittle the women as if to say as there women there not able to dance in a way that they can, but the females prove them wrong.

Website Analysis - Rihanna

This website carries the same design as the album cover. The theme present is the use of red flowers, soft focus images and pictures of Rihanna with red hair. The logo is also the same which is the "R".
The red flowers and the soft focus images represent love, femininity and a chilled out approach to the album. The main focus on the homepage is the image of Rihanna which instantly tells you this is her website and allows you too see what she wants to look like towards her fanbase/target audience.
The main tool bar along the top is present throughout the website to help navigate around the website quickly and easily. This website helps promote and sell Rihanna to a wider audience as the website has merchandise and various other information about Rihanna including tour dates and sections where you can purchase her music.
The website allows her record label to promote her to a wider audience as this is available online all around the world, this produces more sales as people visit the website and can listen to her music. Also people will be able to see when her tours are, purchase tickets and buy merchandise which also produces more money for the company and artist.
The same design is carried throughout the website to help make the website look professional and up to a high quality standard. The website uses the same font within the text which also makes the website look good. The background of this page is very neutral, this allows you to focus on the actual material you are looking at which is the artists images and albums, the images also stand out which is the main focus of this page which draws you to click onto them to find out more information.

We will use the idea of having a neutral background to keep the design sleek and minimalistic to draw our main focus on images of the artist and her music. Also we will have the toolbar along the top to make navigating around the website much more time efficient and easy for people who haven't visited the website before.

Goodwin Analysis - Ravers - Now Your Gone

As typical ravers there is always some kind of illegal substance involved, in this case it's alcohol which isn't illegal to buy or drink from the age of 18. This shows that their target audience is of the age 13-17 years old as they are not old enough to be doing this.
This shows a DJ and a popular scenery which means its a popular place and commonly a night club, which then again means you have to be 18 to be allowed in, The DJ is a male which also shows that there's an alpha male.

This shows a can in the fast lane, this also reinforces the target audience of being under the age of 17 as you have to be 17 to start to learn to drive, which incourges them to want to be older then they really are and be like what is shown in the music video.

The structure of this includes a beginning, middle and end as it shows the start of the night at the beginning, that happens during the night while their out in the club and then after the club.

Website Analysis - Ellie Goulding

I have chosen to analyse the website of Ellie Goulding because I analysed her digipak and her music and genre also suits our artist.

This is the homepage of her website. It is different from the digipak I have analysed; this may because she is changing her appearance to please her audience and suit the style of an artist in 2014.

The colours of her website are more vibrant and more eye catching. You can also see that in some of the hyperlinked photos which she has used, this matches her background. This is because the background is almost representing her new album, 'Halcyon Days'.

The photo which she has used for the background is of her as though she is whipping her hair. The way the photo has been taken makes her look wild and adventurous, a different look to what she had on her digipak.  The other photos which she has used on the home page almost represent her as a person and an artist and give the audience an idea of her life and what her personality is like.

The text in the website is also bold and all in Capitals. The use of this font also gives the artist a more dynamic look and approach and makes her appear bolder and louder.

The way in which she has set out each separate photo on the homepage is also like a social networking page as she has a grid of photos which have been dated, as though to show what that day of her life was like.

At the top of the homepage there is this toolbar. The artist has used this toolbar to promote herself through other social networking websites, such as Twitter and YouTube. Although it is small and not hugely noticeable some of her audience will be interested and click on the links. Doing this would get her more noticed and more people will follow her on these sites. This means that when promoting using Twitter for example will become more noticed, causing her to be more successful.

The navigation bar on her website is also not really a bar. The buttons are set out singly and separated by a triangle. The triangle can be seen as 'indie' and 'hipster' which could be a new style which the artist is aiming for.

Animatic Storyboard

Here is the animatic storyboard I have created using our images from our storyboard. I have put these images with our song to see if we have enough shots to match the track length.

Find the video below to see the animatic storyboard:

Test Footage

Below is our video which shows some different ideas and angles we will be using in our final music video. This helps us see what works and what doesn't, also it shows us what scenes fit with the song and where to place them.

Digi-pack analysis - Ellie Goulding

The artist's digipak which I have decided to analysis is Ellie Goulding. I have chosen her because we could create a similar digipak to this as she has a similar audience to us and also creates similar music to use.
A digipak is important because it gives the artist an image and also sells to the audience which we are aiming to satisfy.

Goodwin Analysis - Rappers

Goodwin Analysis - Hip Hop

Lyrics and Visuals
The first link between lyrics and visuals is for the lyrics "rari workout". Rari is slang for Ferrari, therefore the visuals link the words "Rari" to the silver Ferrari which he is driving. Also, the word workout is used a lot and there is a lot of visuals of men at the gym or of men which are 'dench' and fit. As these are the main lyrics of the song, these visuals are also the main focus. These two releate to the genre because it is likely that the audience are highly interested in cars and also want to make themselves look good.
Therefore using this look in the video is aspirational to the audience.

Another visual in the song is the female passenger in the car. She only appears in the music video when the artist appears to be singing about her. This gives the audience a visual of what the artist's 'girl' looks like and what the stereotypical girl looks like in that group of people. The use of the girl is also aspirational the audience because they are likely to want a girlfriend like this. This is because the girl in the video is pretty, popular and interested in the same things as the boy.

Notions of looking
The music video makes the audience focus on the body/look of a female, the expensive, aspirational car and also the inspiring figure of the man. There are often close ups of the car and the 'perfect' body in which that men have. You can clearly see that these are focuses of the video. At the start of the video there is also a medium shot of a girl wearing little clothing, showing of her body. The immediate reaction to this is to look at her figure in a sexual way.

Inter-textual reference
There is not clear inter-textual reference in this video. The only similar video which this relates to is the music video of 'German Whip'. You can see the similarities because of the use of cars and lighting.

Demands on label
The music video has a demand to keep its audience satisfied. This music video does this by being aspirational to the audience and including things in the video which they would like. The look of the video is as though the artist is rich and has everything which he could ask for. This attracts the audience because it makes them dream and want the things which this artist has.

Structure
This music video is purely performance based and has no story to it. You can see this because most of the shots used in the video are very similar and based in the same location. You can also see that it is performance based because the artists are singing into the camera and are at times using a handheld camera to focus it on them and to control it themselves.

Goodwin Analysis - Emo

This band has worn dark clothing with white parts to make it look like bones of the inside body. They've all got pail white make up on to make them look more like death. Make up is typically feminism. This is a performance as the band if performing on a stage.

The setting of the scene is dark but the stage is a little lighter then the background other then the black colour of their clothes their wearing. The lyrics are deep emotional lyrics which makes the audience able to see that there emotionally angry due to what their doing on the stage.

As the male has come back to life from the beginning scene he's been reunited with his lover, this shows deep emotion as due to the death the two lovers have been drawn apart, when this scene come on the music changes as though its got a meaning to it. As the girl is wearing a mask it shows that she's made out to look like an object rather then a human.

Goodwin Analysis - Ravers/Nu-Ravers

Lyrics and Visuals:
The song does not have many lyrics, the only word most used is 'Centipede', the name of the song. As this is a ravers song not many lyrics is expected. However, in the video, when the word 'Centipede' is said, something quickly happens on screen and only lasts a second. A lot of the time an actual centipede is shown before, during or after the word has been said. The visuals make it clear that it is not just a random word which the artist is using but they have actually thought of a way to present the Centipede.
The quick movements and dark lighting also conform to the genre of ravers/nu-ravers. This is because a rave will have fast flashing strobe lights which will change from bright to dark lighting very quickly. Therefore the video is appealing to the audience because of the use of quick movements and dark lighting. The video is also very trippy and unrealistic, which is also appealing to the audience because they are likely to be drug users and the video is almost a representation of the effects of drugs.

Notions of looking:
The notions of looking within this video vary. One of the notions of looking is the flames and violence caused by the man. This is a notion of looking because it is the only brightness which is used in the music video and also is a sign of danger. The use of fire will appeal to ravers because it is likely that they will like the sense of danger and fury. The fire also flickers, like a strobe light which would be used in a rave.

The second notion of looking is the woman in the bath. Although the song does not relate to sex or sex appeal, there is still a sexual reference to this woman. This is likely to be used in the video because ravers/nu-ravers are likely to be interested in sex appeal and although it is not relevant to the music video, it still makes them want to watch the video. There are also close ups of her in the bath, which makes the scene more intense and sexual.

Inter-textual reference
The inter-textual reference in this music video is a reference to an exterminator or 'pest control'. The official pest control would use a exterminating gas to kill bugs; similarities can be seen in this video as the man is killing the centipedes, but with fire. The video has created fire using the gas, rather than just the gas
because it is more dangerous and will also appeal more to the audience.

Demands on label
The label has a demand to meet the satisfaction of the audience. This is why they have created the music video in this way. The music video includes lighting, movements and characters/props which the audience would like. These include the fire, the insects, the reference to drugs and the woman in the bath.

Structure
This music video has a linear structure as it shows a story of the man entering the building to kill all of the centipedes. He is then relaxing by the woman in the bath - she is his gaze. He then takes a drug like substance which then turns him into a giant centipede, making the video even more trippy and unusual for the audience.
