Goodwin Analysis - Ravers/Nu-Ravers

Lyrics and Visuals:
The song does not have many lyrics, the only word most used is 'Centipede', the name of the song. As this is a ravers song not many lyrics is expected. However, in the video, when the word 'Centipede' is said, something quickly happens on screen and only lasts a second. A lot of the time an actual centipede is shown before, during or after the word has been said. The visuals make it clear that it is not just a random word which the artist is using but they have actually thought of a way to present the Centipede.
The quick movements and dark lighting also conform to the genre of ravers/nu-ravers. This is because a rave will have fast flashing strobe lights which will change from bright to dark lighting very quickly. Therefore the video is appealing to the audience because of the use of quick movements and dark lighting. The video is also very trippy and unrealistic, which is also appealing to the audience because they are likely to be drug users and the video is almost a representation of the effects of drugs.

Notions of looking:
The notions of looking within this video vary. One of the notions of looking is the flames and violence caused by the man. This is a notion of looking because it is the only brightness which is used in the music video and also is a sign of danger. The use of fire will appeal to ravers because it is likely that they will like the sense of danger and fury. The fire also flickers, like a strobe light which would be used in a rave.

The second notion of looking is the woman in the bath. Although the song does not relate to sex or sex appeal, there is still a sexual reference to this woman. This is likely to be used in the video because ravers/nu-ravers are likely to be interested in sex appeal and although it is not relevant to the music video, it still makes them want to watch the video. There are also close ups of her in the bath, which makes the scene more intense and sexual.

Inter-textual reference
The inter-textual reference in this music video is a reference to an exterminator or 'pest control'. The official pest control would use a exterminating gas to kill bugs; similarities can be seen in this video as the man is killing the centipedes, but with fire. The video has created fire using the gas, rather than just the gas
because it is more dangerous and will also appeal more to the audience.

Demands on label
The label has a demand to meet the satisfaction of the audience. This is why they have created the music video in this way. The music video includes lighting, movements and characters/props which the audience would like. These include the fire, the insects, the reference to drugs and the woman in the bath.

Structure
This music video has a linear structure as it shows a story of the man entering the building to kill all of the centipedes. He is then relaxing by the woman in the bath - she is his gaze. He then takes a drug like substance which then turns him into a giant centipede, making the video even more trippy and unusual for the audience.
